Blog World Expo 08 Tweetup Parties and Video #bwe08

September 25, 2008 by Debra · 1 Comment

Of course we had a “Talk Like A Pirate Day” Blog World Expo 08 tweetup (where Twitter friends meet face to face) in Las Vegas! Friday night at the Tempo Lounge in the Hilton.

It was a great kick off party for the weekend. Warren Whitlock was on the “air” with his TwitCast... I can’t even list all the great people that showed up to this party. And… yes, I got 10 people to put on an eyepatch to win the gift packs I put together (which included a free bar drink) - I was a popular girl that night!

After the tweetup it was time to head to the TECHSET & BLOGWORLD AFTER HOURS PARTY at the Bare Lounge - Mirage Hotel.

All I can say is the weather was perfect for a pool/cocktail party. But it was so crowded and loud that I couldn’t think much less speak… so we left (on the hunt for some fun slots)

I found some great blog world party photos and videos on these sites:

http://www.toprankblog.com/2008/09/blog-world-expo-photo-roundup-1/

http://blogs.zappos.com/blogs/inside-zappos/2008/09/25/blog-world-expo-08-twitter-party-gone-viral

http://zacjohnson.com/blog-world-dinners-networking-parties/

If you have more photo links for #bwe08 that should be listed… add to the comments please!

I (Debra) was one of the three lucky winners selected for an invitation to a special dinner with the Market Leverage group on Saturday night. This amazing dinner at the Envy Steakhouse… wasn’t only about the food. I met Jen Fluker from Market Leverage… didn’t get to spend much time talking shop… mostly girl talk.

I sat across from the Unique Blog Designs crew… and they are now working on a new blog re-design for my “life after public domain” blog.

I was surrounded by some really smart “guys”… on my left was Jim Kukral who has to speak pretty softly or he will scare you to death. His voice resonates… plus he’s much taller than I am. Jim told us about a new book he is writing. He is trying to devote most of his time to this new project, so is considering shutting down The Daily Flip. Maybe he should make it The Weekly Flip???

And on my right I met Ryan Hupfer or @Hup on Twitter who must be one of the tallest people I’ve ever met. He was fun and interesting throughout the entire dinner. We fought over the crazy-good side dishes served. The tag line on his business card - “Communicator of Awesomeness”… does that give you a clue? Plus… he works for HubPages… so I grilled him on some “best” practices.

Then we were all off to the Blog World Cocktail Party for a few short minutes. Then…I had another dinner to get to at 9:30 p.m. Yes, I had to fit in more food! This invite came from Kevin Eikenberry... who is just plain amazing. He posted a great article about preparing for conferences - which was helpful for me, but I still need to get a better plan before I hit the road. I hope Kevin and I can work together - he helping me reach my professional potential… and me helping him with a super secret public domain project. hmmmm.

And Warren Whitlock was at this dinner as well… he sat at the other end of the table entertaining some of my “tribe”

Now… I finally made it to Sunday night. The conference is over and a large percentage of attendees have “left Nevada”… But - Dave Taylor put out a tweet on twitter that he wanted to have a Tweetup dinner. So… off I went to what I thought was going to be a pretty low key event. I mean… we were all exhausted weren’t we? Apparently not… Bloggers just keep going like the Energizer Bunny. Big Bonus - I got almost everyone at the event share their websites and some wisdom on this video….

Oh… and Warren Whitlock was at this dinner, but he arrived after I taped this video… Sorry Warren! (Do you think Warren was stalking me or I was stalking him?) Anyway… Warren and my tribe hit it off… he is so entertaining and gracious.

Click on picture or this link to watch the video: Blog World Expo Tweetup #bwe08

(BTW… it takes a few seconds to start after you click the arrow… it’s a big file!) I am loading it up YouTube as well.

Whoops… I misspelled http://twitter.com/francoisplanque on the video… He told me I would!

Free Public Domain Photos For Your Blog

September 6, 2008 by Debra · Leave a Comment

Public Domain Photo Using Public Domain Photos is an easy way to add a bit of “pop” to your blog.

I do like to take my camera out and click away to get some great shots for my blog articles. But, they often sit unused on my hard drive… taking up valuable space.

Plus, time is usually a problem. Blogs should be updated often, and if adding a quick photograph or two will help give color or drive home a point… then I need access to on target photos quickly.

The problem is often a matter of price. I don’t want to pay for photos if I don’t have to. At a dollar a pop, this could be an expense that I just don’t want to put into the budget. (I have enough expenses… thank you very much)!

This image was used on a blog that is very popular. It has a page rank of 6 and it’s less than a year old. (We should all be so lucky). This is the blog I’m talking about: http://artofmanliness.com/

Up Date - As of July 2009 the page rank has dropped to 1  - Go Figure….

The ease of finding these images that are in the Public Domain or have a Creative Commons license… is apparent in this blog. It adds to the look of his subject which has a very “manly” theme and subject matter.

So… could you use some help in deciding how and when to use Public Domain Photos? It use to take me a bit of time to find each photo to use in my blogs… but now it’s become so easy.

I learned where to find them and some tools that are quick to use for editing if necessary. The difference between a blog article that is plain Jane… and an article on a blog that has just one colorful Public Domain photo is really amazing.

A colorful graphic draws the eye to the beginning of the article… and gives the reader a quick clue as to the article’s subject.

Raggedy Ann and Andy Childrens Books In The Public Domain

September 4, 2008 by Debra · 1 Comment

Children’s Books in the Public Domain don’t usually excite me… unless they have beautiful or cute graphics.

I love to use the graphics to create products or use in blog articles.

I have fond memories of my Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls… in fact, I still have one of them.

Andy survived for over 50 years in my house and he still proudly sits on a shelf with some of my favorite old children’s books.

This cute image reminded me of Christmas at first. But now I can see that one doll is telling stories to all the other dolls.

Find a cute caption and create coffee mugs or posters on CafePress.com using Public Domain images.

Children's Books Public Domain

Raggedy Ann with an entire can of blue paint spilled over her.

As a professional house painter, I could relate to her predicament. Plus, I can see this graphic on several products.

This last image just seems perfect for a beautician product.

I was happy to find these graphics so readily available in the Public Domain.

Qualifications For Writing Great Blog Articles

September 3, 2008 by Debra · Leave a Comment

To attain success as a writer of great blog articles you must possess at least four qualifications:

  • The ability to find subjects that will interest the average man and woman, and to see the picturesque, romantic, and significant phases of these subjects;
  • A sympathetic understanding of the lives and interests of the persons about whom and for whom he
    writes;
  • Thoroughness and accuracy in gathering material;
  • Skill to portray and to explain clearly, accurately, and attractively.

You have heard of the sense of news values commonly called a “nose for news,” whether innate or acquired, is a usually a pre-requisite. Like a newspaper reporter, the writer of great blog articles must be able to recognize what at a given moment will interest the average reader.

No Maroni Day
Like the reporter, also, you must know how much it will interest the reader. You must be on top of everything that is going on in the world that relates to your blog subject. By reading newspapers, magazines, and fourms, as well as television and radio and by talking with people that are as excited as you are about your subject, you will have endless subject matter for blog articles.

Creative Commons License photo credit: bertherL

Plus, you will also learn how to connect your niche blog subjects with events of interest from around the world.

Not only should you be quick to recognize a good subject; you must be able to see the attractive and significant aspects of it. You must understand which of its phases touch most closely the life and the interests of the average person for whom you are writing. You must look at things from “the other guy’s” point of view. A sympathetic insight into the lives of your readers is necessary for every writer who hopes to keep his readers interest.

The importance of curiosity and of a keen sense of wonder should be emphasized as one of the aptitudes most good writers have acquired early on. Alert mental attitude that is constantly focused on the people around you is called “human curiosity”… which counts among the highest of social virtues and leads to a better understanding of human behavior.

A journalist or writer must have consuming curiosity about other human beings–the most intense interest in their doings and motives and thoughts. It comes pretty near being the truth to say that a great journalist is a super-gossip–not about trivial things but about important things. Unless a man has a ceaseless desire to learn what is going on in the heads of others, he won’t be much of a journalist–for how can you write about others unless you know about others?

In journalism, writers are needed who have a natural sense of wonder.… You must wonder at man’s achievements, at man’s stupidity, at his honesty, crookedness, courage, cowardice–at everything that is
remarkable about him wherever and whenever it appears. If you haven’t this sense of wonder, you will never write a novel or become a great reporter, because you simply won’t see anything to write about. Men and women will be doing amazing things under your very eyes–and you won’t even know it.

The ability to research a subject thoroughly, and to gather material accurately, is absolutely necessary for any writer who aims to do acceptable work. Moreover, the discovery of incorrect statements usually reduces the confidence of the blog readers.

Readers want to know the meaning of facts and figures, and it is the writer’s mission to bring out this meaning. A sympathetic understanding of the persons who figure in your article is essential, not only to portray them accurately, but to give the story the necessary “human interest.” To observe accurately, to feel keenly, and to interpret sympathetically and correctly whatever you undertake to write about, should be your constant goal.

You should seek to write well enough to make the average person see, feel and understand everything you are trying to portray in your article. You goal for writing great blog articles with ease and in your own original words, is to acquire the skills to be authentic, original and an expert in your subject.
