Writing Of Great Blog Articles

March 10, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

How to write a blog article
Although innumerable books about how to write a blog article have been published, no attempt has really been made to discuss in detail the writing of great blog articles.

In the absence of any generally accepted method of approach to the subject, it has been necessary to work out a systematic classification of the various types of articles and of the different kinds of titles, beginnings, and similar details, as well as to supply names by which to identify them.

A careful analysis of current practice in the writing of stories and popular articles is the basis of the methods presented. In this analysis an effort has been made to show the application of the principles of composition to the writing of articles. Examples taken from representative articles are freely used to illustrate the methods discussed.

ProBlogger: Secrets Blogging Your Way to a Six-Figure Income

Particular emphasis is placed on methods of taking your knowledge and turning that “brain dump” into an article that is easy for the average reader to understand. It’s important that you learn to write in an interesting and compelling way, but not to talk over their heads.

Plus… the article should be written in such a way that the reader can use the information and apply it in their own lives. Unless you are writing for the purpose of entertaining… you are probably writing to teach. Mixing of the two is great… but if the reader can’t actually use the information to help them with a problem, they are not going to be interested in reading anymore of your information.

The problem, therefore, is to show you the writer how to present discoveries, inventions, new
methods, and every significant advance in knowledge, in an accurate and attractive form.

The idea might seem simplistic… and be regarded by some college instructors in composition as an undertaking scarcely worth their while. They would doubtless prefer to encourage their students to write what is commonly called “literature.”

The fact remains, nevertheless, that the average writer cannot write anything that approximates literature, whereas experience has shown that almost anyone can write acceptable popular articles.

Moreover, since the overwhelming majority of Americans read only blogs, newspapers and magazines, it is by no means an unimportant task for our universities to train writers to supply the steady demand for well-written articles.

Every editor of a magazine, every editor of an earnest and worthy newspaper, every publisher of books, has dozens or hundreds of important tasks for which he cannot find capable men; tasks that require scholarship, knowledge of science, or of politics, or of industry, or of literature, along with experience in writing accurately in the language of the people.

Special reports and popular articles constitute a type of writing particularly adapted to the ability of the novice, who has developed some facility in writing, but who may not have sufficient maturity or talent to undertake successful short-story writing or other distinctly literary work.

Most articles cannot be regarded as literature. Nevertheless, they afford the young writer an opportunity to develop whatever ability he possesses. Such writing teaches him four things that are invaluable to any one who “just wants to have his own blog or write for other blogs.

It trains him to observe what is going on about him, to select what will interest the average reader, to organize material effectively, and to present it attractively. If this series of articles helps the inexperienced
writer, whether he is in or out of college, to acquire these four essential qualifications for success, it will have accomplished its purpose.

Hey… I know learning the writing of great blog articles is a bit difficult to learn. Want to know how I learned to write articles that are easy to read? Informative? Interesting? I often use Public Domain (copyright free) articles from old magazines and reword them a bit to make them fit in with more current - modern “times”.

Using Public Domain Advertising

March 4, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

public-domain-advertisingDesigning ads for your company — be it an online or offline company — can sometimes require a large amount of creativity and time on your part.

If you’ve had to do this (not by profession) you already know it can be a frustrating experience.

Or, maybe you don’t need to spend the time because you have the money to pay someone for their creativity to design your ad.

But why not keep more of those profits for yourself?

To cut your expenses and save your time (and frustrations!) of coming up with slogans, pictures, and text on your own, turn to public domain advertising  to help you in your endeavor of designing ads.

public-domain-adsSince the purpose of your ad is to increase your company’s sales by successfully promoting the services you provide, the design and layout of your ad is very important.

The size of your text, pictures (if you decide to use them), and colors used should be bold and catchy to grab your reader’s attention.

Using a layout that’s interesting and easy to follow will persuade potential customers to look further into your business.

Find Public Domain Advertising

Whether you have an idea in mind or you’re starting from scratch, you’ll have to find public domain content that corresponds to your desired outcome.

One method to find this type of free content is searching through major search engines using words such as “public domain photographs,” “public domain cartoons,” “public domain articles,” “public domain magazines,” etc.

Also - check out this site: http://library.duke.edu/digitalcollections/eaa/

This can help you develop and find slogans, text, and pictures for your ad.

Design Your Own Advertising

Draw a rough sketch or outline of your ideas and the placement of your message and pictures, focusing on the aesthetic appeal and simplicity of the ad.

  • Is there too much information or not enough?
  • Do the colors match and give a good feel?
  • Notice your font sizes — do you have any text that is too small to read or so large it takes up important space?
  • Be sure any promotions, sales, and your contact information can be read with ease.
  • It can also be helpful to have someone else look over your ideas and give you constructive feedback to eliminate any missed errors or problems with the ad.

This can be both a time and cost effective way to develop an ad for your company. Take the content you find or mix your thoughts with ideas provided from public domain advertising and you just might get the best ad your company has seen yet.

How To Use Public Domain To Build A Blog

February 25, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

public-domain-magazine-coverThink you can’t use old public domain to build a blog? Think again.

You have options! Quality content is always at your fingertips…

Military History is a huge topic… this blogger has created many blogs relating to military history and his own military history. All of this content is supplimented with Public Domain graphics, images and content.

http://patriotfiles.org/index.htm

Graphics- Everyone loves to ad beautiful graphics to their blogs … but we can’t afford to purchase every graphic we use. Some of the best graphics and art is now in the Public Domain. Why? Because it was used to illustrate books and magazines.

This website sells prints of Public Domain graphics in a variety of ways http://www.chartingnature.com/ but you can use public domain art and graphics to “spice” up your blog. Selling prints is an entirely different (and possibly profitable) subject… but all bloggers need great graphics.

Just adding one public domain picture to a blog post will catch the readers eye… create interest… or evoke an emotion. These are all great reasons to find and use copyright-free art in each and every blog post.

Comic Book Review - This site is not “entirely” public domain. It’s a review website… which is one of the easiest to keep going with fresh content. As you can see from this blog article - it does contain lot’s of Public Domain comic book reference material. It seems easy for this blogger to add content related to old comics because it is his passion.

All Out Public Domain Content - ModernMechanix.com This blog does not need an explanation. You can see they are building a huge blog with “just” public domain content and images. They have over 12,000 indexed pages on Google. (There are probably duplicates of pages) What would you give to have a website with that many pages indexed in Google?

And… Click here to check out another blog using copyright free content: Use Public Domain To Build a Blog

Need Product Ideas To Sell?

And if you are looking for product ideas - look no further than the Public Domain. Here is one profitable product that has used Public Domain material for it’s content:

Take note: these ideas should give your creative juices a recharge.

Use Stumble Upon For Increased Blog Traffic

February 18, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

stumble-your-blog

Getting traffic to your blog is one of the most important tasks of an online marketer. Webmasters spend lots of time optimizing their sites for the search engines, submitting them to directories, and building incoming links.

It’s a lot of work, but if done properly, the traffic will come.

StumbleUpon is one place that can help increase your traffic. It’s a website that allows users to discover web pages.

They download the StumbleUpon Toolbar, and click on the “Stumble” button when they want to be taken to a new page. They may give each page a “thumbs up” or thumbs down”.

Sites are selected from those submitted by other StumbleUpon users based on the user’s interests and ratings of similar sites. Not only is this a fun way for web surfers to discover new things, it also presents a grand opportunity for webmasters who are seeking traffic.

How to Use StumbleUpon for For Increased Blog Traffic

In order to get the most out of StumbleUpon, you’ll need to download the toolbar and use it to rate and submit some sites. This serves a couple of purposes.

  • First, it familiarizes you with the kinds of things that go over well.
  • Second, it reduces the chances of you being viewed as a spammer when you submit your own sites. Other users can see what you’ve stumbled and submitted, and if that only consists of things from one or two sites, they could report you for spamming or vote your submissions down.

Once you’ve used StumbleUpon for a while, you can go ahead and submit a page you would like to send some traffic to.

You can do this by visiting the page and clicking the “thumbs up” button. A window will pop up telling you that you have discovered a new site, and it will ask you to tag it and write a short review.

Selecting the right topic and tags is important in order to get the right kind of traffic. You’ll need to choose ones that are highly relevant, and ones that people would use to find the type of page you’re submitting. It’s also helpful to include a short, intriguing review. Some users look for pages of interest on the StumbleUpon website, and those with reviews are more likely to get traffic from there.

StumbleUpon can deliver a quick spike of traffic. But it can also bring in traffic for months to come if the page gets good ratings. StumbleUpon is free, quick to download, and easy to use.

Adding it to your traffic-building toolbelt can bring droves of visitors to your site, and if they like what they see, they’ll stumble more pages and keep the cycle going.

5 Major Mistakes To Avoid When Blogging

February 11, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

five blogging mistakesYou do have a blog - Right? I hope you have many blogs - at least you should have plans for a ton of content rich blogs targeted to those micro-niches that can make you major-profits.

Creative Commons License photo credit: woodleywonderworks

It’s all about finding great tiny- tightly targeted markets and then blasting out the content.

But… many new bloggers start making mistakes right away. It’s so easy to get distracted from your goal.

Remember these 5 Rules and you will be light years ahead of your competition:

  1. Failure to plan your blog - before you write one article.
  2. Failure to keep the blog on target - Focus on the micro-niche.
  3. Expecting to have traffic to your blog right away - and - expecting to make money from your blog right away.
  4. Writing articles that are “just plain Jane - ho hum - boring”. You can always count on Public Domain content to be written by professionals and of course you can use that content to “write” all the blog posts you will ever need.
  5. Failure to use every traffic generating tool at your disposal.

Once again… I turn to Avril Harper for an in-depth explanation:

FIVE Major Mistakes New Bloggers Make

That Fatally Affect Their Profits!

By Avril Harper

If you are new to blogging and still feeling your way around, or if you’ve been blogging for some time but you’re making less money than you expected, it could be time to examine your blog for simple mistakes that most new bloggers make. Correct those mistakes then set your course for a lifetime of profitable blogging! These are the most common early blogging mistakes:

* Failure to Plan. Which means if you don’t plan your blog by choosing a layout that suits your purpose and determining what to blog about and when, you will just end up wasting your time, and making nothing. Spend time planning your blog before posting to it, look at other people’s blogs and adapt their ideas to suit your purposes (do not copy too closely and do not breach trademark and copyright laws), study ways to grow traffic to your blog or else you could be blogging forever with no one ever to admire your work.

* Failure to Focus. Be focussed and choose a definite subject for your blog. Niche blogs tend to rank higher in search engine listings than blogs having no special order or theme. This is because, when people search online, search engines look for sites rich in information to benefit their customers and will choose themed blogs over others containing information about anything and everything and sometimes nothing!

* Expect immediate visits. Don’t expect immediate results and do not stop blogging if your blog doesn’t attract visitors or profits during its first month online. As for any web site, the more content you add to your blog the higher your blog will rank in search engines and the sooner you’ll attract regular visitors.

* Create boring posts and titles that no one wants to read. Make your posting titles unusual, make them cryptic, this way you’ll incite curiosity and ensure your visitors actually read your postings and probably also join your mailing list or buy one of your recommended products.

* Failure to promote. Promote your blog every day, use free and low cost traffic generating techniques. Write articles, for example, featuring your blog in the resource box; post on other people’s blogs and link back to your own; post in forums and mention your own blog as a source of helpful advice to solve common member problems and queries; place free classified ads. on and off the Internet offering free gifts to people who visit your blog.

After all that you really can expect regular high traffic and good overall profits for all your hard work.

In the world of blogging, it is important to keep new and well written material on your blog. For most bloggers, this means sitting down to write blog posts everyday to keep the traffic flowing to their blog.

This is a lot of time consuming work to come up with new blog posts everyday. There is an easier way to post to your blog everyday. You can use public domain articles to post to your blog. It is simple to do and will save you a lot of time and energy in maintaining your blog.

To use public domain articles, you will need to find a few public domain magazines in the niche that your blog is focused on. There are many different types of magazines and articles in the public domain that will be written on the topics that you post about in your blog.

Once you have a collection of public domain articles and magazines… it’s time to pull out an article for a blog post. Read the public domain article to make sure that it is still relevant for today.

Remember many public domain articles were written many years earlier. This may cause some of the references to be out dated. If you find a piece or two that is out dated in a public domain article, you can still use it for a blog post. Just change the reference or out dated piece in the article to something that is relevant today.

There are two ways that you can use the public domain article that you have chosen as a blog post.

A public domain article can be used just as it is. There is no need to rewrite a public domain article before you use it as a blog post.

The second option of using a public domain article as a blog post will take some rewriting on your part. If the public domain article is on the long side, you may want to break it up into multiple blog posts. Articles are written in sections. Take one of the sections of the public domain article and separate them. Rewrite the section of the public domain article to make it a cohesive thought as a blog post.

There are so many different aspects to keeping a blog.

By using public domain articles as your blog posts, you will take one thing off of your to do list when it comes to your blog. You could never have to write a blog post again with the amount of public domain articles that are available.

Make sure you pick up the latest copy of The Pirates of the Public Domain Magazine where we share some cool places to find Public Domain Articles.

How One Marketing Email Sucked My Time

February 1, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

This is a RePrint of an article I wrote for Public Domain Treasure Map Subscriber’s Only Site:

Don't Let Email Suck Your Time

I’m usually pretty focused. I have to be. I have so many blogs and products that need attention - I can’t afford the time to get sucked in by every marketing email.

You know the drill.. “Make a Million with this One Easy Trick” type emails. I’m on so many marketing lists… I don’t have time to unsubscribe to them all… so they usually go into the Trash Folder. Oh- I do put a few in my read later folder… in case I ever have some down time (which rarely happens).

Creative Commons License photo credit: brittanyculver

So… How did one marketing email suck my time?

I usually read every email form James J Jones (the guy who put together the Micro Niche Finder Tool). I was first introduced to James years ago when I watched his popular find a Public Domain niche on eBay video.

He is one of those guru types that isn’t really a guru. He is really a down to earth, under the radar and makes loads of money kind of guy (guru). That’s my kind of guru!

Anyway… I got this email from him yesterday (he has a series of them going out right now) that showcased one of the videos that were submitted for a recent contest he held. The contest is over - but the end result is that he has several video’s that were submitted to him showing how someone uses his Micro Niche Finder Tool in their business.

I took10 minutes and watched. Big mistake. (Not really - if you want to see the Power Of This Tool). Here is the video:

Actually… I watched the video and closed out the email. Interesting video… but I didn’t want to start working on anything New! I know it will suck up my time.

But- always with that big “But”… The ideas in the video stuck in my head.

Side Note - I try to never buy anything the first time I read about it in an email or on a sales letter. I confess… this doesn’t always work for me. Sometimes Sales Letters are really good… and the product they offer seems to be something that will solve a problem.

I do have some old websites that go after a tightly targeted niche market (they are eBay affiliate sites). And I got bored with them within a few days… So they never really made me any money. I’ve let them all slide off the radar. This is the kind of website the video shows… and I suppose that’s why it didn’t really interest me at first.

The time-suck started when my brain had a bit of free space… and I started thinking about my husband.

I’ve been trying to get him to start his own group of websites in niches that interest him. I’ve just about given up on this dream. But not quite.

Last night - I thought about the domains I’ve purchased for him, and the ideas I’ve given him.

They are all just ideas at this point. But…

  • What IF - I could start setting up all those websites for him?
  • What IF - I could get him off on the right foot and then maybe he could take over when he saw them all in “real life”.
  • What IF - These websites could start to generate some real cash… cash he could see? Would this motivate him?

You know I hate to give anyone the EASY button… but he is my husband after all. :)

The idea I have for my husband - Several websites and products about his passions. Of course these are all “man style” hobbies… like: Hunting, Fishing, Anything to do with Sand Dunes etc. All of them interlinked and interconnected in some way.

The video (above) got me thinking about setting up some “easy” and “quick” sites - using the ideas I have for him. Just to see if they would “fly”.

So…. Then I got to thinking about Fishing and Worms of all things. (Worms is NOT a profitable niche - or so I thought). Just look on eBay and see that Worms are for sale… but I wasn’t going to make any money affiliating with eBay sellers that sell Worms. LOL

And then I started to remember some conversations he and his father had several years ago about worms and growing worms (worm farms) etc. (My Father-In-Law has all kinds of crazy ideas… and we just have fun helping him find the information he wants).

I fired up my MicroNicheFinder Tool… and started hunting for good ideas and keyword phrases related to “Worms”. I spent about 20 minutes finding some very interesting phrases (you wouldn’t believe what people type into their search bar). I put them all into a “bucket” - which is like a separate file in the “tool” to keep everything handy.

Once this bucket has about 30 or 40 key word phrases... you open this bucket
and see if all of them "together" look like a good target market. The
software really helped me find an niche that isn't being targeted my
anyone... and it is related in a way to "Worms".

Then I went on the hunt for a domain name that used one of those tightly targeted keyword phrases. Funny… this took longer than normal. I did find a great one… but I had to be creative in my thinking.

  • I bought the domain… and got a Word Press blog set up. I even found a good “free” Adsense WP theme to use. The video (above) talks about using http://www.nicheadsensethemes.com/ and http://www.phpbay.com/ both are products that have to be purchased… And I wasn’t in the mood to spend any “real” money on this website yet.

The products that can be sold from this website have a much larger price tag then “Worms”. But… still related.

I have spent about 2 hours on this project so far. A bit more time than usual - because finding a domain name was a bit of a struggle. And… of course… I knew it was sucking up my time!

Because - I really don’t want to make this an eBay affiliate site - I didn’t purchase the phpbay plugin. I already have the BANS software and it works great. I usually do well with this type of site using:

  • Clickbank
  • Amazon
  • Adsense
  • Commission Junction - and other affiliate partner sites.

But how was I going to fill this website with

relevant content - quick and easy?

I could just go out and purchase a bunch of PLR (Private Label Rights) articles or grab a slew of articles of ezinearticles.com… but you know it’s getting much harder to rank in the search engines with “regurgitated” content.

You already know the answer to this question... or you should. I’m going to find some great Copyright - Free Public Domain content to use for my (hubbies) new “worm” site.

I use Public Domain magazines for just this purpose. Yes… I often to purchase PLR articles… but then I punch them up by re-writing them using Copyright Free articles. It’s fast and doesn’t take a lot of effort on my part. I might even just hand it off to one of my VA’s (Virtual Assistants)…

Can you see why Outsourcing is one of the keys to my success?

Did you know I could Read Your Mind?

Yep… It’s my guess… that right now… you want to know what the “target market” is?

And… you want to know what the domain name is?

And you want to see the website and what I used to fill it with?

Remember the first line in this article? The one where it says

Easy Ways To Write Articles Fast

January 29, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

Easy Ways To Write Articles FastI have to write articles every day. Many articles. I have lots of newsletter subscribers, blogs and products that all need articles.  How about you? So you need easy ways to write articles fast.

Creative Commons License photo credit: Alex France

I’m going to share several of my fast article writing tips with you today. Some may be repeats of tips you’ve heard before… but the bottom line is - They work!

Tip #1.  Use PLR and Public Domain to get all the content you need to “start” your article. By now you must know that you should not use PLR (private label rights) articles as is. Why would you? You can spend a few minutes changing the content into something new and fresh… Can’t You?

By using Public Domain copyright free material in conjunction with the PLR articles… you can quickly add new content to replace some of the PLR content… mix it all up… and out pops a 100% original article by you.

Easy!

Tip #2. Use a template.  Yep… an article template is one of the neatest tricks for writing articles - Fast!

Open up your MS Word document (or other document formating software) and create a blank document.

Add in a place for:

  • Title
  • Subtitles
  • Put in place markers for paragraphs  - 2 or 3 under each subtitle
  • Your Sig Line Area

Now every time you need to write an article… open up your template and start entering everything you can think of that should go in your article in the appropriate slots.

Once you have dumped everything on this template… it’s quick and easy to adjust everything and Boom! Your article is done.

Tip #3 Closely connected to the template method  is to  use the 4-step writing formula…

Step One:  Write Out A List of Everything You Want To Share.  That’s right, just write down everything you want to share in your article.  I’m talking just start rambling on paper (or your computer screen).  Everything you can think of that relates to the subject of your article.  Just a list of “ideas” you want to share.

Step Two:  Write Everything You Can Think Of For Each Entry.  For each entry on your list (I.E. Each “idea”) write down everything you can think of.  Explain each idea as thoroughly as you can.  Share research, examples, case studies, quotes, tips, resources — everything you can find for each section.

Step Three:  Organize Your Thoughts.  Take everything and put it into a logical order.  If it’s a tutorial, organize it chronologically in order of which steps come first.  If it’s a “tips” article, categorize the tips.  Put things in a logical order for your readers to be able to understand as they begin reading.

Step Four:  Edit And Pad The Sections.  Go back to each section and edit.  Take out what doesn’t need to be in there.  And add more content to the sections that need further explanation.

Congratulations.  You just wrote an article. :o)

Get High Ranking Backlinks Strategy

January 28, 2009 by Debra · Leave a Comment

When looking at some of the ways to get high ranking backlinks, such as, Link Development Backlinks Forums That Allow Backlinks are a very good strategy to get your website to the top ten of the search engines. The only thing is that you are probably not too excited with the workload. Who has the time to build a website, promote it, lay out and implement a marketing strategy, and write multiple articles?

Most people just don’t have that kind of time. So, it’s important to locate resources to help you build the backlinks that you need. This can take the form of hiring people on your team to help you build or re-write PLR articles or to help with article submission to different directories. Also, you might want to consider article submission software to help automate the process and reduce your workload.

Contract Others To write For You

Like software developers there are plenty of ghostwriters that are willing to write custom articles for you. You can find some at exquisitewriting.com, Elance.com, Guru.com or at RentAWriter.com. DigitalPoint.com also offers forums for people looking to hire writers. Craigslist.com can give you access to local writers in your area, if that’s important to you. You will have to buy the full rights in order to use them in the article directories.

In large bulk orders, you might be able to get away with $5-10 an article ranging within the 300 to 700 word range. While there are people willing to build articles at very low prices, you may find that the quality isn’t what you desire. It’s important that you get good ghostwriters that will create unique, quality, articles as you will eventually be claiming them as your own. They will represent your personal and professional reputation on the Web.

For high quality ghostwriters, you can expect to pay between $10 to $45 for articles ranging between 300 and 700 words, depending on the quantity you buy. The guidelines may be different for each site. There also are companies that specialize in helping you to get your articles ready for submission to multiple sites. When looking for good link development, backlinks that come from high PR sites are the best. Remember one thing, all backlinks are not the sme.

Being the Internet, of course, nothing is as straightforward as it seems. It’s simplistic to suggest that anything that is a backlink will enhance your site’s value or search engine ranking. Tech wizards invented the Internet, and many of those geek geniuses ended up in search engine companies.

So, even though a standard HTML URL is easy enough to understand (once you get the hang of it), search engine optimization is quite elements that can affect your search ranking, but it looks to be a strong criterion in how you rank, at least in the Google search engine.

Google has captured over 60% of the search enging market so I feel that is the main search engine to spend valuable time to optimize for. In “Backlinks: Marketing Gold” you can also learn how the context and positioning of a backlink has a great effect on how useful it is to improve your page rank in search engines. Of course, you will want to get backlinks from sites with good page rank, as they will be weighted more or considered more relevant by the search engines.

The higher up you are in the page listing (home page not necessarily being the best page), the more the backlink is weighted. You will learn why link referral pages are no longer as good a strategy as getting your link on relevant pages with few other backlinks. Also, it may surprise you to learn that where the link appears on the page (top, middle, and bottom) can also influence how strong a backlink it is perceived to be by the search engine-ranking algorithm.

There is of course more to why you need back links. Specifically “One Way” back links. Learn why you need link development, backlinks, and most importanly where and how to get good high PR backlinks without spending a dime. Visit: http://pleazz.com/craigs/Get_more_backlinks.htm
